For the Fourth of July I went to a free concert thingy in Zilker Park. Austin, being the capital of Texas, likes to put on rather a big show for Independence day. I caught the free shuttle down there with the redoubtable Danes to witness the spectacle.
Basically it was the Texas philharmonic orchestra playing music while the sun went down, then a whole lot of fireworks. Oddly, as well as playing traditionally patriotic stuff like the Marine Corps’ anthem “Halls of Monteczuma” , “The Star Spangled Banner” and so on, the played a bunch of music from the Star Wars films. Crowd-pleasers I suppose. Hearing the Imperial March played on America’s national day of patriotism was slightly ominous.
Then there was a half an hour or so of fireworks. Can’t say I ever get terribly excited about fireworks, but it was kind of impressive.
